Dividing of the earth. While prd (NIV “spread out”; KJV “divided”) in 10:32 has traditionally been taken to refer to the division of the nations after the Tower of Babel incident (11:1–9), other possibilities exist. It can, for instance, refer to a division of human communities into sedentary farmers and pastoral nomads. Or perhaps it documents a migration of peoples that drastically transformed the culture of the ancient Near East—one represented in a break-off group traveling southeast in 11:2. Given the lack of any further reference in the Bible to such an event using the same verb, we are left without the information needed to clarify the comment further. This is another example of where the original readers were likely well aware of what was being referred to, but the passage of time has left it obscure to us. It is not even clear whether the text presents it as a negative or positive development.
