Fortune favors the brave.

Charity begins at home.

So many men, so many opinions: to each his own way.

WILDE, OSCAR(Ireland, 1854-1900) After his release from prison—where he served two years for "committing acts of gross indecency with other male persons," a reference to his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas—Wilde moved to Paris. To avoid publicity, he lived under an assumed name and was largely impoverished, in self-imposed exile from society. Prison had seriously undermined his health and he spent his last few days in a hotel in Paris. But his wit, and his emphasis on esthetics, was undiminished. "My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death," he is reported to have said of his lodgings. "One or other of us has got to go."
