HANDY TABLE NO. 12 A NICE, SIMPLE FOUR-YEAR PLAN FOR A SINGLE BED
Rotation always follows a specific order – just like certain memorable cultural figures:
■ John is followed by Paul is followed by George is followed by Ringo
■ Kourtney is followed by Kim is followed by Khloe is followed by Caitlyn
■ Solanums are followed by roots are followed by legumes are followed by brassicas
To show you how rotation works, we’ve created Handy Table No. 12 (above), a nice, simple four-year plan for a single bed or other area in your zombie garden. Although after reading it, sharp-eyed readers will be wondering: What happened to all the other annual zombie-garden crops, like squash and beetroot? When do I get to grow the green manure you keep banging on about?
The answer to a) is that while you should still grow them on a different patch of ground each year, these kinds of veg count as neutral: you can grow them alongside legumes, roots, brassicas or solanums without any trouble. As for b), green manure is sometimes a legume, sometimes not; some you grow in winter, some in spring or summer. So you can fit them into a rotation in lots of different ways.
Before you give up and decide that starving might be preferable to working all this stuff out, take a look at Handy Table No. 13 on the right. If Handy Table No. 12 was good, this is even better, because it suggests a way to plant that takes into account growing seasons, nutritional needs and pH preferences, and has more stuff to eat.
This is just a suggestion – you’ll need to experiment to find out what works best for you, depending on what you grow, what kind of soil you have, and how you’ve divided up your plot. Don’t despair, though. Rotation might at first seem complicated, but in fact it’s more like the Spider-Man movies: you wait a few years, then just repeat everything all over again.
