The Organic Market

The organic movement really took off during the 1980s, largely as a northern and middle-European phenomenon. There are 4,000 registered organic producers in the UK. Demand continues to grow at a phenomenal rate - organic sales had increased to £1.12 billion in 2003-2004. About 10 per cent of farmland in Austria, Denmark and Sweden is organic, while the figure is around 2 per cent in Germany, France, Italy and the UK. Almost 10 per cent of British organic farms are bio-dynamic and there are now about 50 such farms. Many organic farms are offering delivery services or supply through local farmers' markets, in order to allow more consumers to access their products, ensure seasonal produce and minimise transport of goods.

In 1993, an EU regulation laid down a legally binding standard of guidelines for organic farming which sufficed to block US legislation of 1998, permitting genetically modified, additive-treated and irradiated food to be sold as organic. The arrival of these new technologies poses rather urgently the question whether any kind of life-energy exists in food. Those with an interest in organic farming or lunar gardening must surely believe that it does.
