Morning glory

Ipomoea tricolor ‘Grandpa Otts’

* * *

A fast growing, annual climber

* * *

Flowering time: August–October

A perfect plant for quickly covering a trellis or fence, morning glory has strong tendrils that stretch and wind like a box of snakes. This climber carries lots of mid-green leaves that are shaped like hearts, and its trumpet-shaped flowers are dark purple with a glowing red star around a clear white epicentre. From August until the first frosts this plant will produce hundreds of blooms that slowly emerge as the sun rises, only to have faded to husks by lunchtime.

One of this plant’s close relations is the insidious bindweed, a perfect example of how short a step it is between glory and the incinerator. As Grandpa Otts was, apparently, a Baptist minister from Iowa, he’d have appreciated his namesake’s redemptive qualities.

Start under glass early in spring; chip seeds with a knife and soak for 24 hours before sowing. The plant is very popular with bees.
