Ground beetle larva (Pterostichus sp.)

The most common ground beetles seen in our yards are the easily recognized Calosoma species. Grubs (beetle larvae) may take a year to develop; they have dark segmented bodies that superficially resemble elongated roly-polys. Adults, which can live up to three years, are dark-colored (sometimes metallic) and usually no more ¾ of an inch long. Pterostichus is a very large genus of ground beetles that includes many garden species. They are generally predators as larvae and adults but, like us, eat the occasional strawberry. And if you host Scaphinothus, you are a lucky gardener—they prey on snails.
