INJURIES

Wayne Ferreira, who played in 56 consecutive grand slams, on ‘HOW TO AVOID SERIOUS INJURY’…

While you need to be flexible and supple, with big, strong legs, having a big upper body can be hard on the legs as you’re carrying that extra weight around the court: ‘Tennis is legs and core based. If you have good stomach muscles, and good strong legs, you don’t really need a strong upper body.’

Don’t try to play through any injury – take some time off: ‘When you have an injury in one part of your body, you’ll overcompensate in other parts of your body, and everything starts going off.’

As a teenager, you have to be really careful when you’re going through a growth spurt, so don’t overdo the weightlifting: ‘Somebody who is 14, 15, 16 years old shouldn’t be lifting too many heavy weights. When your body is still growing, that can be quite damaging. I would suggest using bands, and the low weight and high repetition stuff, and only start bench-pressing and all that sort of stuff when you are fully-grown. That’s probably when you’re 18 or 19.’
