Chapter Twelve

Unfortunately, the next morning Kyle is rejected from a job Nanny assured him he’d have no trouble getting and his Happy Halloween mood is gone. I’m not so cheerful myself, since I wake up with stomach pains that turn into diarrhea that lasts a few hours, and when I suggest that maybe the obviously ancient caramel corn was to blame Kyle doesn’t appreciate it.

We bumble along to the weekend, with no great happiness but no disasters either, until he asks me to go with him to the laundromat and I have to say, “I’ve actually got other plans.”

His “oh?” should seem innocent but it doesn’t.

“I—” Briefly I consider making up a story, but I don’t want to lie to him. “I’m doing a pie-baking class.”

“Yeah,” he says, “you left the confirmation page on the couch.”

Good thing I told him the truth. A little annoyed he was trying to trap me, I say, “I’d have asked if you wanted to come too but there was only one spot left, so…”

“Yeah,” he says again. “Well, have fun.”

I nod, hating the renewed distance between us but not knowing how to fix it, and head for the door. I’m nearly there when he says, “By the way, when did you register?”

Knowing he’s seen the confirmation, I don’t even consider lying this time. “Tuesday. After you said you’d do the contest separately.”

“Hmm. And you’re sure it was full?”

I turn around to face him. “What do you mean?”

He shrugs. “You want to beat me, right? I’d have probably done the same thing.”

Not that he can afford it. I don’t say that, but I think it and he must see it in my face because he walks off into the bedroom and closes the door behind him.

I consider going after him but I’m only just going to be on time as it is. And besides, what can I say? I’m sorry I have an income and you don’t? I’m sorry you decided we should compete separately?

I stew all the way to the class, but once I get there I decide to push it aside and try to have some fun. This may not be how I’d originally have chosen to spend a Saturday afternoon, but I’m here now so I might as well enjoy it.

“Brittany?”

I turn around, half-recognizing the voice, and find myself enveloped in a hug. Surprised, I try to pull away, but when he says, “It’s been forever, hasn’t it?” I realize who it is and hug him back.

“Jon, how are you? You’re right. Forever.”

“Since high school.”

He releases me and takes a step back, and I get my first good look at the boy I was madly in love with. Not a boy any more. He was tall in high school too but he may have grown even more, and while he was a beanpole before he’s filled out now.

“You look great,” I say, and he smiles and says, “Right back at you. Why’d we ever break up, Brit?”

A woman’s voice behind him says, “So you could marry me?” with nothing but amusement in the tone.
