Ethan held the woman he’d fallen for like a stone in his arms. Two years ago, he’d broken all the rules his family had lived with and started dating Penny. She was a human, unlike any of the females in his clan. At first, he’d chosen not to tell her about his shifter status because he wasn’t sure how she’d react. Not that he hadn’t slept with human females, but she was different. She was the one. The more time he spent with her, the more he realized he didn’t want her to leave him. Unlike him and his brothers, she’d been raised dirt poor with almost nothing to her name.

Thinking of her history and how she’d come out of it, the struggle she’d endured to become something in a family of nothing, tugged at his heart. He’d been trying to figure out how to tell her of his wealth without sounding full of himself. Or without making her feel like she wasn’t good enough for him.

What ended up happening, was that she’d found out through word of mouth, something he hadn’t expected. He could almost hear her brain working, trying to decide what to do about him. About them. Only this time, he wouldn’t let her just close him out and push him away because she felt deceived. He’d never actually lied to her. He’d gone as far as baring his soul so she could see he loved her. Nothing had worked.

“Ethan.” She shifted, leaving his arms, holding with one hand the pieces of what used to be her dress up to her chest. She slipped shaky fingers through her curls, pushing the long, dark strands away from her face. “We need to talk.”

He didn’t dare smile, though he wanted to, at the mussed-up hair and smeared make-up. God, she was so fucking beautiful. Even like this: angry, confused and a mess, he wanted her again. She could be wearing a box and he’d want her. There was no taming the desire he felt for her. Would always feel for her.

He handed her his shirt, hoping she’d feel more comfortable wearing that, but also for his own peace of mind. There was no way in hell he’d be able to sit there and talk to her when all he wanted to do was tear the fabric away and fuck her until he came inside her at least three more times. He wanted to pound her hard, fucking her until he couldn’t go on, draining himself in her. The bear demanded he reclaim her body.

“I never lied to you,” he said. Though saying the words he’d repeated to her should be easy, it still bothered him that she had honestly believed him capable of deceit. He might not have told her about his bear or his money, but he never lied about his feeling for her. Ever.

“Look.” She cleared her throat, her gaze sweeping down his naked torso and his pants’ open fly. “I don’t know if I could trust you after that.
