DAY 21

SOLVING DECIMAL EQUATIONS

Another day. Overcast with a slight chance of showers. First let’s do some algebra prior to hitting the links.

Today’s topic is working with decimals in solving linear equation. We will work our way up the ladder in difficulty. So here it goes!

Example 1: 0.6x = 15

Solution:

Clear out the decimal point by multiplying both sides of the equal sign by 10.

0.6x(10) = 15(10)

6x = 150 Divide both sides by 6.

x = 25

Check it out: 0.6(25) = 15 AOK!

Example 2: 1.4x + 6 = –22

Solution:

Again, multiply all three terms by 10.

1.4x(10) + 6(10) = (–22)(10)

14x + 60 = –220 Subtract 60 from both sides.

14x = –280 Divide by sides by 14.

x = –20

Check it out:

1.4(–20) + 6 = –22

–28 + 6 = –22

–22 = –22 AOK!

Note: Students sometime like to get variables and constants on opposite sides of the equation. It is your choice. See Example 3.

Example 3: 2.4x + 0.6x = 50.46 + 12.3

Solution:

I suggest adding 2.4x and 0.6x on the left side. Also, adding 50.46 and 12.3 of the right side.

3x = 62.76 Divide both sides by 3

x = 20.92

Check it out:

2.4(20.92) + 0.6(20.92) = 50.46 + 12.3

50.208 + 12.552 = 62.76

62.76 = 62.76 AOK!

Three for three! Keep on rolling!

Example 4: 3.02x + 15.4 = 1.6x + 24.275

Solution: (use your calculator)

Multiply all four terms by 1000 to remove all the decimals. Why 1000? Because 24.326 needs to move three places to the right. That would be 1000.
