Chapter Five

She went to use the copy machine, but stopped just outside the door when she heard her name.

Two of the guys from accounting were talking.

“So, you think Rick’s sleeping with her?” Blake asked.

The other guy, Drew or something, said, “Why do you think he brought her up here? She’s going to nail her way into management and shut out Liam, and you know Liam is more qualified.”

“I’d nail her,” Blake said. “I’d be tempted to make a play for her if she wasn’t such an ice queen.”

She almost laughed at that. Almost.

Drew snorted. “Like Rick would let you get anywhere near her. He’s got her tucked away in his office. He’s practically marked her as his territory.”

Kate swallowed. She’d thought maybe Rick’s attention wasn’t as significant as she thought, or maybe everyone else would just view it as friendly. Rick was friendly.

“I don’t know what any of you see in her,” Drew said. “She’s a frigid bitch.”

“Have you seen her ass? C’mon…frigid bitch or not, even you’d want a bite of that.”

“Maybe.”

Kate turned and walked back the way she’d come. Opening the door to Rick’s office, she slipped inside and dropped down in a chair across from his desk.

He looked up from his paperwork and smiled—that perfect smile that could get him any female in the building—other than her.

She cleared her throat. “I’m married.”

His mouth dropped open. Then he recovered and started sorting things on his desk as he asked, “Is this recent?”

She swallowed. She should probably just do this quick—rip off the bandage. “No, I’ve been married for seven years now.”

He tossed the pencils he’d gathered in his hand at his desk and leaned back in his chair, shaking his head. “It wasn’t in your personnel file—not that it’s any of my business. And no one else thought to mention it.” Several of the pencils rolled across his desk and off of it. Neither of them moved to pick them up.

“It didn’t happen…here in the U.S., and I don’t think it’d be…recognized here legally, and we’ve been estranged.” His palatable relief worried her so she rushed to add, “We’ve been estranged. We’re not anymore. We decided yesterday we might try again.”

“Yesterday? Wait, he lives here?” His mouth dropped open again, and this time he numbly shook his head and muttered, “I dragged you up here.”

She opened her mouth to say something, though she was just as curious what she was going to say when Rick sat forward suddenly and pointed at her. “Wait! He’s the reason you didn’t want to come here! Is he a threat? Do you need legal help getting out of this marriage? If he’s hurting you, Kate, we can…”

“Stop!” she said, perhaps a little louder than necessary. “Look…look…Jack wouldn’t hurt me. It was just…I was young when we first separated, and I wasn’t sure I could make a marriage work.”

“But he does live here?”

Kate closed her eyes and took a deep breath just as Rick’s assistant said over the intercom, “DeWinters is requesting Ms. Finley down in the lobby.
