Richard Hell: We [had] agreed to take the same tack as I hoped to do in Television, where Johnny and I would sing the songs that we wrote and it would be about equal . . . [but] it was just that the music was too brutish for me. It was clear that it wasn’t gonna have any kinda musical ambition except to stomp out rock & roll, which I like, but I wanted to be able to extend it more. The way I felt was that it was a perfectly amicable parting, but only recently I’ve seen all these places the guys say they kicked me out because I was too pretentious or something like that . . . I [just] realized I wanted a band that I led upfront.
