When Love Is Not Reciprocated
I am to you what the prophet is, and you are to Me what the prostitute is. To you, it’s just a product; but to Me, it’s a relationship.
God expresses the inequity in His relationship with the children of Israel through the inequity expressed in the relationship between the prophet and the prostitute. He is saying, “That is how unequally yoked you and I are. I am to you what the prophet is, and you are to Me what the prostitute is. To you, it’s just a product; but to Me, it’s a relationship.”
If you are not familiar with the story, Hosea loved Gomer openly. It is one thing to love secretly, but it is another thing when love goes public. It’s one thing to be a secret admirer—at least you can keep your pride and dignity. But what do you do when your love goes public and your woman is openly running around with every man who will pay for time with her?
I’m a guy, and I know how guys talk to one another about a woman who has been around. “Look, man, I know you’re a nice guy, but she’s not the one. Now, I don’t want to get in your business, but she’s not the one. You know, I’m not going to say nothin’ about her, but she’s been around with the fellas a little bit. I’m not saying you can’t see her or somethin’, but all that stuff you’re doin’—getting her a car, getting her an apartment—look, she gave me her phone number last night. You know what I’m sayin’?”
Love is embarrassing when it is not reciprocated. It messes up our other relationships. There is collateral damage when it is not reciprocated, because people who love us hate to see us go through the pain of our passion. They try to save us because of our pain, and we fight them because of our passion. There is conflict.
God said, “Loving Israel is making a huge conflict for me. So, Hosea, you go down there and marry a tramp, so you can see what I am going through loving My people. While I love you, you are looking somewhere else.”
Hosea took her and gave her everything she could have ever wanted. Everything she was out there working the street for, he gave it to her. He brought her into his house, and he gave her everything, but he could not change her mentality. Sometimes God’s goodness will take us to a place where we cannot rest, because we are hooked on evil and iniquity; and even though He offered us a better life, it didn’t taste good to us because we have been hooked on trash. There is nothing more difficult than for a good man to offer himself and all he has to a woman who loves bad boys. He ends up being a brother figure to her. He picks her up after some bum hits her in the head with a
