Drop in on Club Meetings

One aspect of teaching I have missed almost more than any has been working with my journalism students. Being a part of the scholastic newspaper programs at my former schools helped me evolve into the educator I’ve become, so it was natural to want to get involved in my new school’s newspaper as well. Plus, I knew I could help without imposing.

After getting the okay from the newspaper advisors, I observed the first meeting and participated in the next. Afterward, I offered to help the advisors provide feedback to the students and offered to co-teach a topic in the journalism class the teacher wasn’t familiar with.

One novel thing I did to upgrade the good work they were already doing was start a Blogger account and put their newsletter into a blog format for easier and more effective readership. While the teachers weren’t comfortable with the platform at first, I was able to show them how to use it and help them see its potential. Because it was easy to use, they were able to put new articles up as students had them instead of waiting for all students to get their work in. This allowed them to get out more timely articles and offered an opportunity for students and teachers to share their work on social networks, increasing readership and building digital citizenship. Throughout the year, we worked together to grow the program, and moving forward, we will offer a more comprehensive elective to prepare students to manage the blog personally.

Like students, teachers need to be empowered to take risks while receiving support as they acquire new skills so they can be successful. This is your most important job as a leader. We need to do this as leaders by allowing our teachers the space to take the risk, get the feedback, and not have any negative consequences attached to the outcome. Teachers need to be able to feel vulnerable around us so they can learn with us. We do that by making ourselves vulnerable and by trying to leave judgment out of our experiences.
