Going downhill fast

I am now 32 years old, still living in Walmley.

Having spent another month in hospital I needed a new start.

My crazy life then took me to block paving. It was all the rage in the 1980s and ‘90s.

This is how my mind works always thinking outside the box. I thought, with all this block paving going down everywhere, there must be a market for cleaning them. I found a company that produced a sealant and drove to London to meet an old man who had devised and patented a sealant for drives. I had done my research (via The Times newspaper).

This man was looking for people to help him market the product. So I arranged for two articulated lorries to take huge drums of his product to my ‘storage depot’ in Erdington.

The only thing was, the old man didn’t realise my storage depot was a lockup garage in a residential street. I told him I had a ‘warehouse’.

But the stuff in the drums was highly toxic and explosive.

Imagine the residents’ faces when hundreds and hundreds of drums bearing the scary skull and crossbones sign turned up in the street not far from where I lived.

They weren’t the only ones to be horrified I was.

I thought it was just a harmless sealant: not highly toxic, highly flammable and highly dangerous.

I had all the green anorak anti this and that protestors’ brigade descend on me. I think I must have been one of the first to incite them. But what a dilemma. I had artics full of stuff and nowhere suitable to put it.

So I told the protestors there had been a mistake. The drums weren’t toxic, I said. It was just floor cleaner. I even offered to clean their drives for them.

But in truth, the whole street could have blown up.

In the end I just abandoned the drums there and set up a company Imperial Block Paving.

I started to make good money out of this venture.

I got some vans on the road and had something like a little builder’s yard. I advertised and travelled all over the Midlands and things were going well.

Throughout this whole experience my main focus was to feed, clothe and educate my kids. But as ever, when all is well I have a tendency to take my foot off the gas.

I got involved with some unscrupulous people and some silly things, while at the same time taking cards and poker more seriously. But in the early days of playing poker I lost a lot of money.

I wasn’t paying for products for my company. Noone was getting paid, so I ended up being sued.

Then I was asked to act as guarantor for a couple of friends who wanted to buy cars. I agreed. But the cars went missing and I had to take over the payments.

Then I started getting stuff on finance and selling them for a quick couple of grand not one of my best ideas.

Before long I was in the shit again. I told lies and had numerous cars on finance.
