During the exercises at Harrowbeer, Wing Commander Peter Stansfeld suffered a bad crash. He later told David what happened:

I was coming into land and I suddenly saw chaps taxiing onto the runway. I thought I must go round again and let them take off. As I was going round the thing blew back and the carburettor caught fire and I was left about 200 ft up, facing Dartmoor or whichever moor it was, with nothing on the clock! I was too low to bail out, so I tried to edge round to make a crosswind landing, which eventually I did, but just as I was getting over the last line of trees, the engine stalled and I went in from about 50 ft.3
