Chapter Five

Jerusalem Communities in Conflict

In a recent study, Eyal Regev traces the history of conflict between Jerusalem’s priestly aristocracy and the leaders of the Jesus movement.1 Regev observes that in most of the deadly or near-deadly encounters between the ruling priests and leaders of the Jesus movement, the sanctity and/or security of the temple is at issue. His insightful study very helpfully lays the groundwork on which the present chapter hopes to build further.2

In what follows we shall consider the stories relating to Jesus of Nazareth, the twelve apostles, Stephen the deacon-evangelist, James son of Zebedee, Peter, Paul, James the brother of Jesus, and Jesus son of Ananias. In most cases temple controversy is quite apparent. In other cases it is conjectured but probable. In the case of the last man mentioned, in which temple controversy is obvious, I will suggest that Jesus ben Ananias also belonged to the Jesus movement. I will also suggest that the principal priestly family at odds with the Jesus movement was the family of Annas.
