Dinner

Lianna

I took in this man. This surprising gift that the universe had dropped into my life.

I liked Kincaid. In fact, ‘like’ seemed too tepid a word to describe my emotions. Words like ‘need,’ ‘want,’ ‘desire,’ and ‘obsess’ were much more fitting.

And his kisses. They were simply divine. The man made me feel things I hadn’t felt in ages. Paul had been a good enough lover, but our lovemaking had become routine during our three-year marriage. Mechanical. Kiss this spot here for this reaction, nibble that spot there for that response. Wait for this particular sound… there it was… and then the finale.

Paul had stopped trying, and because of that, our lovemaking had become stale. Boring. He’d taken me for granted.

Taken us for granted.

Our passion had vanished. And our lovemaking had become infrequent toward the end. Had he been cheating on me all along? Had he brought other women into our bed before Gloria?

Did it even matter anymore?

As soon as I’d caught them together, I’d made an appointment with my gynecologist to be tested for any sexually transmitted disease he might have passed on to me. It killed me to have to admit to people that I’d been so deeply betrayed. It made me feel like a fool.

I took another sip of Kincaid’s delectable Cabernet Sauvignon, determined to keep all thoughts of Paul and Gloria out of my mind. This moment was mine, and I wasn’t going to allow them to ruin it. I was well rid of the man, and I wouldn’t let him intrude on my life any more than he already had.

I tore off a piece of bread and dipped it into the oil blend. “I hope you like garlic; otherwise, tonight might be a problem. I was a bit heavy-handed when I added it to the lasagna.” I bit into the oil-drenched bread.

The corners of his lips lifted. “I love garlic.”

“That’s a relief.” I licked a bit of olive oil off my thumb with the flick of my tongue. “Tell me more about the Murphy project.”

He watched me intently, taking a moment before answering. “That one is a whole-house renovation.”

“That one? Are you working on more houses than mine and theirs?”

“I almost always am. I have several others in the pipeline. I finished up a sunroom addition two weeks ago. My other active one is adding a new first-floor bathroom to a house in Sewickley. A lot of these older homes only have one bathroom.”

“Just like mine.”

“Exactly, but you’re adding a bit more.”

“So, you do all sorts of jobs?”

“All shapes and sizes. Some are major overhauls, some are additions, some are kitchen renovations, and some are simpler, like replacing drywall. We do it all.”

The timer went off. I turned toward it and picked up my red silicon oven mitts. I opened the oven door and the delicious aroma of lasagna hit me full in the face as I leaned over to extract the pan.

I could feel Kincaid’s gaze on me again as I straightened. I glanced back, and sure enough, he had his eyes pinned to my backside.
