In 2007, the LEGO Group made 10,000 special gold chrome C-3PO minifigures and randomly inserted them in Star Wars sets. Do you have one at home?

MINIFIGURES GET REAL

In 1989, LEGO’s pirate line launched, the first minifigures to have more realistic facial expressions. Pirate minifigures were also the first of their kind to include special accessories, in this case hooks for hands and pegs for legs.

More LEGO accessories were added over the years. They ranged from all types of hats and hairstyles to a wide variety of things to hold. And while many sets include a “good guy” and a “bad guy,” you will never find a modern gun or weapon because that goes against LEGO’s principles of wholesome play. Instead, LEGO arms its minifigures with weapons that take some creativity to ignite, such as medieval swords, old-fashioned guns from the Wild West, or futuristic weapons such as Star Wars lightsabers.

Colors, too, started to change. The original minifigure was created yellow, a color chosen to represent equality among all people on earth and not intended to represent any one race. Over the years, the color has been altered only when the minifigure is supposed to portray a real person, such as a professional athlete, or a character from a movie like Harry Potter or Yoda.
