Open, don’t close, dialogue. Netflix’s documentary The Social Dilemma captures the extent to which social media has contributed to society’s increased polarization and extremism. Social media is not an easy place to respectfully disagree. Nuance, tact, and grace don’t often find a welcome home on a Facebook comment thread. A 2017 study by the Pew Research Center showed that posts exhibiting “indignant disagreement” received nearly twice as much engagement as other types of content on Facebook. Another study by William J. Brady and his colleagues at NYU found that each moral or emotional word in a tweet increased its virality by 20 percent. If you engage in political or difficult conversations on social media, whenever possible, seek ways to open rather than close dialogue. Call in rather than call out. Avoid shaming, hold back judgment, and try to assume the best intentions, even if someone posts something you vehemently disagree with. If you’re interested in going deeper, ask someone if they’re available to discuss their feelings offline, on a phone call, or in person. Or, simply state, “Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’d love to discuss this another time with you offline.”
