Less Is More

Start by buying yourself something lovely. It doesn’t have to be a major purchase. Just buy a new scarf. An inexpensive piece of interesting jewelry. Get yourself a manicure. Wear just a little less makeup (or a little more, if you’re doing absolutely nothing right now). Buy one cream. I recommend the one from L’Occitane en Provence. Take ten more minutes for your bathing time/after bathing/shower time. And as corny as it sounds, stand before the mirror and say, “I’m beautiful” because, you know what? You are. And if I were your French maman, I would tell you so—no matter what your particular look may be. Forget about some idealized version of beauty. If you don’t have Angelina Jolie’s full lips or Jennifer Aniston’s hair—it doesn’t really matter. Oh, and while we’re talking about celebrities, turn off Entertainment Tonight and don’t watch it for a few months. French women don’t follow celebrities the way we do, and it’s probably better for your mental health not to be assaulted by these discouraging images of “perfect” women leading their “perfect” lives—until they fall from grace, that is.
