The First Schaw Statute began an important Masonic tradition that has carried through to the present day. It called on all lodges to keep written records of their meetings, referred to as Minutes. Before a lodge can do any business, it must read and approve the Minutes of its previous meeting. The oldest known lodge Minutes today are those of Edinburgh St. Mary's Chapel, which started to keep Minute books immediately after the 1598 meeting with Schaw.

The First Schaw Statute also tells us a lot about early Freemasonry. From it we know that Scottish brethren met in lodges; that these lodges were ruled by Masters and Wardens (one Master with a Senior Warden and a Junior Warden to support him); that there was a system of meetings at a higher level than the lodge; that lodges were obliged to keep written records of their activities; and that they were honor-bound to observe the ancient traditions of their Craft.
