LISTEN!
I need something to listen to while free-motion quilting. It helps me relax and get into the quilting zone. I might listen to a podcast, music, or even an undemanding TV program. I avoid anything intellectual because it requires too much concentration.
Week 2: Combine, Create, Find
This week is an opportunity to expand your choices by combining motifs that are already in your inventory, creating new motifs from what surrounds you, and finding new motifs from the work of others.
Each day this week choose to either combine, create, or find new motifs to plactice.
COMBINE MOTIFS
Combining motifs adds interest to quilting, and it’s an easy way to create more quilting stories. Take a little time to sketch and play with the motifs you are already comfortable with.
One suggestion to get you started is a combination I call Flutter. Flutter combines a simple repeated S-curve with Half-Moons and/or feathers. It is an elegant fill that can be a subtle background or a feature, depending on the thread choice and scale. A thin thread that matches the fabric would be subtle while a bold thread that contrasts would be a strong statement.
I recommend breaking Flutter down into its parts and quilting each before combining. As always, I recommend sketching this first before you start stitching.
1. Plactice the S-curve motif, echoing each one 2 or 3 times. On my sample I echoed each curve 3 times. Try to create space in between the curves for the Half-Moons or feathers. Think of those empty spaces as vessels to hold feathers and Half-Moons. You might want to trace my path with your finger to get the gist of how I quilted this sample. Fig. H
