Practice Exercise
Use the basic shapes and designs on pages 43â47 to design a panel to practice stitching on lines.
You can also use common things you have around the house: cookie cutters, plates, saucers, cups, small boxes, and a straightedge to easily duplicate the designs provided or to make your own designs.
Designs from found objects
At this point it is not important how pretty or uniform your designs are. All we are concerned with is developing control over the quilt sandwich.
1. Cut a piece of muslin the width of the bolt by 36â long. Leave the piece folded in half as it came off the bolt, and press if necessary to remove any wrinkles.
2. Draw a series of designs on the muslin. Start with straight lines, squares, triangles, curves, and so forth. You can use anything to mark these designs. A pencil, ball point pen, or marking pen will work just fine. All you need is to be able to see the markings.
Do not worry about the quality or accuracy of the designs. We are going to practice control and following the lines.
3. Place a piece of thin batting between the layers of folded muslin. Use safety pins to pin the sandwich together. Put the pins about 6â³ apart, trying to keep the pins away from the lines you have drawn.
