The O.C.

(2003–2007)

A sandy-haired teen steps onto a dark street just outside a tony mansion. He’s wearing a gray hoodie, black leather jacket, and matching black choker. Just as he starts to put a cigarette in his mouth, he spots a young woman standing a few feet from him.

“Who are you?” she asks, intrigued.

Cigarette in mouth, he gives her a sideways glance. “Whoever you want me to be.”

A gentle breeze ruffles the young woman’s hair. She smiles. The teen approaches her and offers her a cigarette, which she lights with the end of his. The two slowly eye each other, sweetly and curiously. In that moment, on a quiet street in California’s Orange County, a tortured, iconic teen television romance was born.

We’ve found our way to Newport Beach, a hamlet packed with juicy drama, misbehaving teens, and misbehaving adults, all set against an idyllic backdrop of piers, surf, and sand. On the outside, The O.C. was neatly packaged as a drama-filled show about beautiful high schoolers. But scratch even a tiny bit below the surface, and you’ll discover a series with the wit of Freaks and Geeks, the intrinsic beauty and sadness of My So-Called Life, and a fresh, new take on the way teen shows could be.
