Towards the end of Grand Days, Edith Campbell Berry agrees to marry Robert Dole, an English journalist. One evening they are discussing their life plans when Robert announces that, after they are wed, Edith will no longer be Australian: ‘You’ll be British, legally speaking.’

Edith replies: ‘In the eyes of the League I will always be Australian.’
