Family Mammutidae

The sole Mastodont Genus, Mammut, probably evolved from the North African Oligocene genus Paleomastodon. Unlike the mammoths, mastodonts did not undergo rapid evolution. The single American species, Mammut americanum, was the first round in Blancan times and probably survived until the early Holocene times 12,000 to 9,000. The species appears to have been morphologically homogenous in both time and space.

Family Gomphotheriidae

A widespread and diverse family whose main lineage can be traced from Phiomia (from the Oligocene of North Africa) to Gomphotherium, a wide spread Miocene Genus. The genus Rhynchotherium also appeared in the Miocene and survived well into the Pliocene.
