The strands took me to Manhattan.

I stepped out onto the street and stared up at a full moon. A cool, misty breeze sent goose bumps over my skin as it slipped through the thin layers of my dress, but I didn’t mind. My body had grown accustomed to such sensations after so much time spent in the Web.

A dog’s bark and quick nip at my feet made me jump. Nuit, my friendly Dust-born canine, pawed at the ground and I released a breath. “Nuit! You scared me!”

Nuit usually looked like a little scruffy animal that fit in with his earthly counterpart, but he must have been recently traveling through the Web because a light dusting of silver coated the tips of his fur, giving him a charming supernatural quality. He continued to paw at the street until I realized he was trying to show me something.

A key.

I picked up the object and tilted my head. “What’s this?”

Nuit barked and bolted down the street, not waiting to see if I’d follow him.

Cursing, I scampered after him. Luckily I’d been wearing my sandals when my Alpha had sent me running. A part of me knew I’d have to bolt at a moment’s notice, so I decided not to go barefoot again if I could help it.

I ignored the curious glances of onlookers, and a few whistles from horny guys in black hoodies who admired my Fortune Fae apparel. Normally I was amused by the attention, but right now I just wanted to get somewhere out of sight and hide, which hopefully Nuit was about to help me with.

The heavy presence of my Alpha lingered in the back of my mind and I could almost feel him plucking away the tangled strands of the Web that I left in my wake. He’d find me soon enough and there wasn’t much I could do about it except continue to obstruct his path. Eventually he’d run out of Dust and take another Omega… right?

A part of me wondered if the Alpha would be so stubborn as to succumb to death rather than give me up. But if he chose to be stupid, that wasn’t my problem.

Focusing on the little ball of fur racing down the street, I followed him until he came to a halt at a tall building. I craned my neck to see it towering into the sky, reminding me of the Collegium.

“You want me to go in there?” I asked. I liked luxurious accommodations, but even this would be out of my bankroll. I did enough visions and human work to get by when I visited the mortal realm, but I didn’t care to go overboard. That would just draw attention.

Nuit jumped up and down, scraping his paws down the wall below a row of buttons. Sighing, I pressed them all and voices complained on the intercom, but it worked. The doors unlocked with a click and I slipped inside.

Nuit bolted to the elevator and waited while I considered the keypad. “This one?” I asked, pointing to a random number.
