SUPPLEMENT CONSIDERATIONS: Look for a multivitamin-mineral supplement that provides 100 percent of the DV for iodine. Supplements typically contain potassium iodide or sodium iodide. The potassium iodide in these products, derived from kelp, is highly bioavailable. However, do not purchase kelp tablets unless the actual amount of iodide is provided on the label. This is very important! You could be getting hundreds of times the DV without knowing it.
PARTNER NUTRIENTS: The trace mineral selenium is important for converting thyroxine (T4) to the biologically active thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3). Selenium may also slow the activity of autoimmune thyroiditis. Be careful not to take excessive amounts of selenium; 100 mcg per day in a multivitamin-mineral supplement is sufficient.
Deficiencies of vitamin A and iron can further exacerbate iodine deficiency. Vitamin A deficiency has been associated with goiter and decreased uptake of iodine by the thyroid. Iron is necessary for synthesizing thyroid hormones, which is particularly relevant for women and young children, who are at greater risk for iron deficiency.
