PHILOSOPHY ON A STICK

In Seasons 1 and 2 of The Good Place, Michael’s neighborhood features a lot of restaurants, with each reboot offering a different trend, including frozen yogurt, chowder, and a variety of “on a stick” restaurants: steak on a stick, bagel on a stick (see this page for our version), caviar on a stick, hot dog on a stick on a stick. But we don’t see Salad on a Stick…

Sal: I need to serve a salad to my father.

Johannes: You seem to have tasty ingredients there on the counter: lettuce, beets, celery, Danablu. Very nice—I approve. But what are you going to do with those bamboo skewers?

Sal: That’s how I’m serving the salad.

Johannes: But…salads belong in bowls. There’s no reason for them to be placed on a stick!

Sal: That’s what Dad wants, and I want to make him happy.

Johannes: But that’s not how salads are served.

Sal: I know, but he’s my father and pleasing him is more important than social convention.

Johannes: That’s a curious ethical justification for a salad delivery system.

Sal: Maybe so, but it’s delicious.

Johannes: I suppose it is up to the individual, and truth lies in the search for an object, not in the object itself. So the making of this salad on a stick to please your father is what matters.

Sal: It’s my leaf of faith.
