From that point on we have spoken at least once a week on the telephone, our conversations always intense and sometimes going on for hours. Josephine studied many years at what she called an “Ancient Mystery School,” where she learned about metaphysics, prayer, and meditation. Oftentimes I told her about my dreams, which were intense and seemed filled with a symbolism I could not decipher, and together we explored the possible meanings and information the dreams were imparting.

When I first told her of my plan to accompany Alex to China, she told me in no uncertain terms that I should not go. The reasons, she said, had to do with certain energies that have amassed in certain locations, due to the attitudes and mass karma of the people. “Like walking into a hornet’s nest!” was how she put it; and she told me that the negativity and oppression in China might affect me deeply in ways I could not predict.

“I have to go,” I said. “I made a commitment to Alex, I can’t pull out of this now.” She conceded it would be difficult, and suggested that I take her phone number with me. Why had I not done it? I am standing in a phone booth, wondering how to get her number, when I see it, in my mind’s eye: her number right there, and I pick up the phone and dial, and within moments she is on the other end of the line.

I tell her, “Oh, Josephine, you are not going to believe this….” and I begin explaining how this trip has become an incredible journey.

“She asked me to take the baby,” I finally say.

There is silence on the other end of the line. I wait, and become aware that this is not the silence of surprise, but that she is praying, that she is checking in with what she refers to as “the Heavens,” her guides in the spirit realm from whom she gets information.

“And what did you say?” she finally asks, quietly, expectantly.

“I said I would. I agreed to take her,” I answer, and I hear her let out her breath on the other end, a great sigh. “Oh, God,” she says. “Remember when I asked you a few weeks ago if you wanted me to come on this trip with you? I knew something of significance was going to happen, I just didn’t know what.”

It was true. She did offer to come, and it seemed so strange to me at the time. Josephine did not know Alex at all, and this trip really wasn’t about me. She didn’t explain why she felt she should come, and the issue was dropped and we haven’t spoken of it again, until now. And now I wonder, what did she know, what did she see?

“Josephine, that’s not all; I’ve been having dreams, strange dreams while I’ve been here, almost every night. I can’t put my finger on it, but these dreams are all about China—maybe it’s connected somehow.”

“Have you written them down?” she asks.
