Two-Toned Scalehead (Kuehneromyces Mutabilis)

Two of these mushrooms are usually connected, but they may come in many more clusters, all connected at the base!

Features: The cap has a distinctive edge between it’s to colors. The center is a pale ochre and the edges are an orange-brown. It starts off a bell-shaped and expands into an umbrella-shape with age. The gills are a brown to rusty color, and the stem is smooth and pale ochre. It has a large, delicate ring that often collapses early, and below where the ring was, the stem is rough and scaly, more so at the base. The flesh is thin and a pale yellow.

Habitat: Two-toned scaleheads grow from May to December in large clusters around dead deciduous trees.

Edible Parts: The flesh is thin but tasty, and the tough stems should be discarded. They are good to be dried and used as a rusty-brown color in stews and soups.
