CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Adrian drove across the Route 90 bridge and onto Ocean Highway, which ran the length of Ocean City’s beach strand. After enrolling Peter in the academy, he’d felt obligated to take Hugh Thomas to lunch. The realtor had gone above and beyond to see that Adrian and his family blended into the new community. But primary on his mind was the meeting he’d set up after lunch—the one with the FBI agent in charge of the security breach investigation.

Adrian slowed, searching the stretch of food places, beachwear boutiques, and tee shirt and souvenir shops for the sign to Seacrets, where he was to meet Agent Rick Statler. He spied the weathered board sign with Seacrets, Jamaica U.S.A. painted on it. It looked as if it had been salvaged from a wrecked ship on a Jamaican beach, hardly what Adrian had expected, even though Ellen had told him a bit about the fun and exotic nightclub and hotel the night they’d gone to Rose’s restaurant. After parking he walked toward the entrance along the sand-strewn pavement past a rickety, abandoned rowboat. All around, island-style shacks were interspersed among palm trees and coral walls. It definitely fit the advertisement of Jamaica, U.S.A.

As Adrian walked through the door and into the open air lobby, a man in a business suit rose from a bench. Adrian recognized him instantly from previous interviews regarding the investigation. Agent Statler looked more like an accountant than an FBI agent, but when they shook hands, Adrian caught a glimpse of his firearm.

“Mr. Sinclair, good to see you again.”

“You, as well, Agent Statler…barring the circumstances, that is.” He didn’t hold ill will toward the man. Just the helplessness he felt. Whatever Adrian had traced or uncovered went straight to the FBI, but nothing came back from them to complement his findings.

The hostess led them into an enclosed section of the massive complex of buildings. Constructed to look like a ramshackle spread of huts, some featured courtyards, while others were accented with old brick and wine bottles mortared together. From what he’d heard, this was one of the largest nightclubs in the country, spread over several blocks of valuable real estate on the bay. It had even expanded with a small hotel, which he’d seen off the parking area. Truly, it looked as though Caribbean pirates had made their home here. As Ellen had suggested, a must see for Peter.

“Will this be alright?” the waitress asked after Statler had requested a private area for a business discussion.

“This is perfect, thank you,” Statler said, sliding into a dark plank booth that overlooked a small, sandy cubicle of palm shrub, hanging with ferns beneath a skylight.

“My name is Kerry, and I’ll be your server. What can I get you drink?”

“I’ll just have a soda. Thank you, Kerry,” Adrian replied.

Statler pointed to the menu. “I’ll have coffee and some of those Phantom Fries. And water. The doctor says I don’t drink enough water.”

Once Kerry disappeared behind a black-painted swinging door, they had
