Phony Tails

A horse with a skimpy or short tail may be doozied up for the show ring with a “tail extension.” A tail extension is a fake tail that is braided or tied into a horse’s natural tail. It’s usually made out of horsehair, but some tails are made out of artificial hairs. They’re allowed for many breeds, such as quarter horses and paint horses. But other breed associations, such as those for Arabians and Morgans, don’t allow them.

Sometimes, you’ll see a horse with a tail cut straight across at the bottom. This is called a “banged tail.” Dressage horses’ tails are often banged. Thoroughbred racehorses’ tails sometimes are, too. Banged tails are more common in Great Britain and Ireland than in the United States.

For some breeds, however, braids and bangs are never in style. Arabians, Morgans, and Andalusians are some of the breeds that are always shown with their natural tails.
