Igor Chislenko—USSR (1939–1994)

A distinctive figure in the Soviet World Cup squads of 1962 and 1966, and the Euros of 1964 and 1968, Chislenko was also the brilliant power behind the Dynamo Moscow team that finally thrust city rivals Spartak and Torpedo aside in the late 1950s. Just eighteen when he made his debut in 1957, Chislenko had a 229-game career that included dramatic league-title wins in 1959 and 1963, and a Cup triumph in 1967.

Surprisingly absent from the national side’s triumphant 1960 Euros squad, Chislenko was onboard throughout the 1964 competition, where the USSR finished runners-up; and in 1968, when they bowed out of the semifinal on the toss of a coin (their match with Italy ended in a draw, and UEFA had yet to decide upon a more sporting alternative to pure chance).
