Happy are those who see beauty in modest
spots where others see nothing. Everything is
beautiful; the whole secret lies in knowing
how to interpret it.

SHE WAS A YOUNG GIRL IN HER FIRST YEAR OF college: wide-eyed, fresh-faced, and eager to experience the college life she’d heard so much about. She got involved in everything from sports to student government to the social life—as well as academics. And she thrived in this new realm of constant discovery.
When she met him for the first time, she was smitten. He did all the right things, said all the right words, and cared about her deeply. They were carried away by the emotions that surged through them, and things progressed rapidly. Too rapidly.
It was a beautiful afternoon when he got the call. She had been feeling tired, nauseous, and unusual, so she went to the clinic. She called him right away when the test results came back. She was pregnant. Although surprised, he wept when he thought about what she was experiencing, what they would be experiencing together. He went to see her, to hold her, and to discuss choices they never dreamed they would be forced to consider.
After hours of tears and talk, he returned to his room and she to hers. Each thought about how quickly their lives had changed. And each wondered what those changes meant for the future. He spent most of the night in prayer, asking God for strength, forgiveness, and above all, wisdom. He prayed that he would be able to care for and comfort her.
She trudged through her classes the next day, her concentration muddled with thoughts of the previous night. Listlessly, she wandered back to her dorm to think and to rest. But when she got there she found a surprise, something so unexpected that it brought tears of joy to her weary eyes. There before her was a magnificent bouquet of flowers. As she stepped closer to admire them, the beauty and the symbolism of the arrangement became clear. In the center of the bouquet, amid the gentle daisies and the rich carnations, proudly stood a single rose. Overcome with emotion, she opened the attached card that simply said, “I Love You.”
