TEQUILA SUNRISE
The inspiration for this recipe was new growth, as buds begin to emerge after a long winter. Here, I arranged the fritillaries as if they had grown outwards from the centre of the cloud, bringing a cocktail of life and colour to the design. I utilized the shape that each stem naturally grows in, which gave this cloud an S-like curve.
YOUâLL NEED
Sharp scissors or secateurs, 30â35 test tubes with lids, 30 x 30cm/12 x 12in square of chicken wire, 1 x 1m/40 x 40in square of chicken wire, 4 cable ties, 1 roll of heavy-duty fishing wire, ladder
DURATION
45 minutes
FLORAL INGREDIENTS
7 stems hydrangea âVeronicaâ STATEMENT
4 stems asparagus fern, dyed lilac TEXTURAL
3 stems gerbera âPasta Rosataâ TEXTURAL
1 stem gerbera âAvignonâ TEXTURAL
5 stems fritillary âPurple Dynamiteâ TEXTURAL
4 stems tulip âMonte Orangeâ SMALL
6 stems carnation âCaramelloâ STATEMENT
1 stem phalaenopsis orchid, dyed peach STATEMENT
HOW TO DO IT
Safely create your suspended structure with chicken wire (see Suspended cloud and How to create a suspended cloud for instructions and design tips). Cover the left side of the wire with statement hydrangeas that have been cut short to add density and depth to the centre. The hydrangeas act as structural blooms here, too. Then, cluster together all of your textural asparagus fern on the right, and place the textural gerberas in the gaps. Add the fritillaries and tulips at the top and bottom, keeping the fritillary stems long to create the S-shape. Add your statement carnations, then add the statement orchid stem last to avoid damaging it.
Kaiâs tips
If youâd like your orchid to sit up, use the fishing wire to your advantage â the stem can be twisted around the wire for extra support!
