AUTUMN COLLECTION

◁ AUTUMN PICK ’N’ MIX

Assembled in a derelict shop whose once-handsome decor is now faded and peeling, this eclectic fruity cocktail reflects on the passing of time as summer gives way to autumn. It is a celebration of the inevitable cycle of life.

‘I know of a bare attic-like room where one small vase of gay flowers makes it look furnished and decorated.’

CONSTANCE SPRY

Ever since they ripped out all the furnishings in the old kitchen shop across the street, I have admired its bare bones when walking past. Here is year upon year of wallpaper, where each layer has made a new fashion statement and provided the backdrop to a creative project, an inspiring display.

With the shop standing empty, I have watched the sunlight move across the road, from our flower shop in the morning, gradually becoming more and more golden before hitting this desolated space late in the afternoon. I’d wonder what flowers would suit the eclectic space, my imagination on fire.

It is remarkable just how many times I dream up a shoot or a project, build it up in my mind as some fantasy scenario only for it to take just a few conversations before I am there and it has become reality. Interactions with neighbours, business owners, parents at the school gate, interwoven, a web of connections. The spirit of neighbourly generosity is often much stronger than I imagine it to be – more so, I think, because of events in recent years. During the pandemic, the more restricted we became in our movement, the more confident I became at asking locally for what I needed. Lilac from a neighbouring garden, peonies from down the road. Writing and swapping notes posted through letterboxes, repaying favours with wreaths or bunches of homegrown tulips.

And that is how this kitchen shop arrangement came to fruition – in the simplest manner. It is a sweet shop pick ’n’ mix of rudbeckia, dahlia and strawflower, little round blobs of colour against the vertical stripes of floral pattern and decoupage.
