Coral Infusion Statement Piece

I can’t quite recall how I first met Geraldine Kildow, but it feels like we’ve known each other forever. She is one of the most joyful and passionate flower farmers I know, and every time I talk to her, my love of flowers grows even stronger. Two decades ago, while working as a full-time nurse practitioner, Geraldine started planning ahead for her retirement and carved out a space on her property to devote to one main crop: her favorite flowers, peonies.

At the end of every June, we make the annual pilgrimage to spend an evening with Geraldine among her flowers. Her love of life and the blooms that she grows is contagious. It seems like the only thing she loves more than the peonies is watching people experience their magic firsthand. Even though I live on a flower farm and get to enjoy blooms all the time, picking Geraldine’s peonies is the best harvesting day of the entire year. There are so many beautiful choices spilling out of her fields that choosing a favorite is nearly impossible, but I always find myself coming back to the raspberry- and coral-toned varieties: ‘Coral Charm’, ‘Pink Hawaiian Coral’, and ‘Cytherea’.

Peonies bloom just as the wild roses are flowering and the early perennials are putting on a show. For this arrangement, I paired my treasured Frances Palmer footed vase with ingredients in soft, feminine colors. The sweet peas’ blush edges pick up the tones of the peonies and garden roses, while autumn ferns’ copper-touched fronds accent the ninebark seedpods. Smokebush lends an antique quality to the whole display.
