Nothing but Waiting
I wonder if at any point in Noahâs process he cried out, âPlease, God, no more hard things!â Could it have been during the 120 years of building the ark? I can only imagine the things that went wrong with the building process. The challenges. The fingers cuts by saws, splinters from wood. The aches in muscles and backs from lifting. Or the tiresome mental state of being responsible for building such a massive structure. Those things that made him feel like he was failing and needed to whisper âPlease, God, no more hard things.â
Or did this cry of his heart to ease this assignment come after Noah had completed the final task of loading these animals up and his family had entered the ark? That part alone had to be exhausting emotionally and physically.
And what about the final warnings he gave to his friends, neighbors, and even his extended family? That had to feel hard as well. Noah was carrying grief in knowing what was coming before anything was even lost.
Something that isnât super clear in the Scriptures is whether others were given the opportunity to enter the ark. The command from God was that Noah, his wife, his sons, and their wives would enter the ark and be saved (Genesis 6:18), but was there even a chance for anyone else? There are so many things we will never know while weâre here on this earth. And trust me, Iâve already booked my appointment in heaven with Noah. I have questions.
But there were a few more hard things that needed to happen before the flooding would begin. After everyone was loaded into the ark, the waiting would begin. And waiting is often harder than working.
Because I know all too well how kids (no matter their age) can be with their parents, I canât help but picture an eye roll or two from one of Noahâs sons. âOkay, Dad, weâre all here, loaded up, now what?â
Noahâs calm voice probably assured them there was a plan: âNow, we wait.â
âFor in seven days I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.â And Noah did all that the LORD had commanded him.
Genesis 7:4â5
Those seven days of waiting before the flood was to begin must have felt like an eternity of waiting and wondering.
Waiting for it all to begin.
Wondering what it would look like for the world as they knew it to end.
Waiting for God to speak again.
Wondering if they were doing the right thing.
Waiting for others to join them.
Wondering if they would be alone.
Waiting for a flood.
Iâm not sure why God waited seven days to start the flood. But what we must remember is the fact that the timing of God is never hurried by the impatience of man. No matter how many times Iâve pleaded with God about His timing, we donât get to change the timeline of God.
