So, today was the day she’d let him down.

Brody should have known that for Tori to be on time and dependable two days in a row was too much to expect.

She lived in a converted apartment above her parents’ garage, next door to his parents. After church, he’d waited at his parents’ until they finally left for the shop, but fifteen minutes later with no sign of her car, he decided to check in on Earl, Tori’s dad.

“Come on in, Brody. We left her at church. Can’t understand why she isn’t back yet. Any minute, I’m sure.” Earl wheeled back from the front door and gestured for him to enter.

Mistletoe’s paws landed in his gut again.

“Think so, huh?” He gently set the dog’s paws on the floor and bent over to scratch her ears.

Earl chuckled. “Well, you know our Tori. Her watch is set to a different time than everybody else’s.”

Didn’t he know it?

“We’re quite the pair,” Earl said with a pointed glance at his crutches.

“Yeah.” But his injury was a little less permanent than Earl’s. “How are you doing?”

“Better on the weekends when I don’t have to visit that blasted physical therapist. She takes torture to a whole new level.”

Brody cringed, but before he could offer a response, Earl continued. “Laura had to run to the grocery store, and I was just making some coffee. Want to join me?”

“Sure.” He could spare a couple minutes before he headed to the shop. He followed the older man into the kitchen, Mistletoe prancing beside him.

An assortment of tools sprawled all over the kitchen counter and the cabinet doors under the sink were open.

“That’s an odd way to make coffee,” Brody teased. “What’s going on?”

Earl frowned. “Laura’s been complaining about that drippy pipe for weeks. Figured while I had the time…” Lifting a shoulder, he turned back around, plucked another mug from the tree on the counter and filled them. “Well, now I have the time, but it’s not as easy as it used to be. Should’ve done it a long time ago.”

“Maybe we can do it together.” Smiling, Brody set the crutches against the wall and glanced at the clock before he eased under the sink.

Earl wheeled over and handed him a wrench and a flashlight. “I don’t know if Tori’s mentioned it or not, but her photos have really started to attract national attention.”

“Really? No, she hasn’t mentioned it.” But, it wasn’t as if they ever discussed her photography. Honestly, it was more of a source of contention between them. He knew she was good, but he had no idea how good. He flicked the flashlight on and aimed it at the pipes. Ah. There it was. Easy enough fix.

“Yeah. You remember Harris Cranston from high school?”

“Sure.” What was taking Tori so long? Sweat beaded his forehead. He really needed to head to the shop. As soon as he finished here—

“She owns a gallery in DC now. And an online shop.”

He grunted an acknowledgement. Kind of challenging to hold a conversation under the sink.
