Chapter Thirteen

After the English couple left with their new purchase, Jacob was elated. When Samuel had asked him to take some hours in managing the furniture store, he couldn’t say no. It wasn’t like he could farm with his daed and Samuel or help with getting the new house framed, but he wondered if he could sell furniture. When he sold a coffee table to the young couple, he felt relieved. They promised to tell their non-Amish friends about the store, and how impressed they were with the high quality of the workmanship. Samuel would be pleased, Jacob thought.

When his arm and leg were healed, Mike said he could have his job back at the lumberyard. He missed working there and getting a nice paycheck, but it was a relief not to be tempted to go with the men after work and get a drink. I wish I could remember if I ever told Judith that I enjoyed getting beer with the guys. And if I did talk to her about it, what did she say? The doctor warned me that it might take time for all my memory to return. I guess I should be encouraged that I remembered inviting her to go sledding.

But the regained memory stopped there. He didn’t recall anything after they left the youth gathering at Ruth’s pond. For a long time he’d wanted to get the courage to ask the beautiful and smart Judith to go with him to a youth get-together. He should remember the important thing was that they had seen each other after ice skating. She was at the hospital waiting for him to come out of his coma. They apparently had gotten close in a short time.

When Matthew opened the front entrance door with Noah following him, Jacob had a flash of memory. Something about the brothers getting into trouble near water, and Judith being worried about them. He wished more of the memory would return, because he had a strong feeling it was important. Did it involve him somehow? “Hello, boys.”

Both Matthew and Noah greeted him in unison. Then they stared at him until he realized they were bothered about something. Jacob said, “I doubt you’re interested in buying furniture, so what’s wrong?”

Matthew’s blue eyes narrowed as he continued to look directly at him. “Judith’s been sad that you don’t remember dating her.”

“I recall taking her to Ruth’s to go ice skating so that’s a start. I wish I didn’t have all these blanks in my memory, but the doctor said it’s temporary amnesia. Apparently, it just takes time.”

Noah glanced at Matthew, then back to Jacob. “Maybe if you take Judith to Pizza Hut this week, that’ll help you to remember more.”

Matthew nodded. “You took Judith once to Pizza Hut while you were dating.”

Pizza Hut...did he remember anything about taking Judith there? No, the only memory of Pizza Hut was eating lunch there frequently with the guys from work. “Danki. I like your suggestion. I’ll ask Judith soon if she’d like to get pizza with me.
