“This is going to be harder than I thought,” I said.

“Come on, newbie,” Sammy said. “We can do this.”

So we tried again. Actually we tried nine more times. We bashed into the Snood Candy Factory twice, the bike fell on one or the other of us six times, and we flipped over the handlebars once. It was the most fun I’ve had in weeks.

On the tenth try we started getting the hang of it. Sammy would push down on her pedal and I’d drift up into the air. Then I’d push down on my pedal and she would rise up. It felt kind of like being on a teeter-totter.

“Hey,” I said. “We’re doing it!”

We took off down the pathway into the woods and bounced off a couple of trees. Then we hit a boulder and flipped over the handlebars.

“This is a blast!” Sammy said. “Let’s do it again.”

By the time we’d crashed another six or seven times, we totally had it down cold. We could have jumped a swimming pool full of sharks and landed like pros, which was a good thing because a fence made out of scrap wood and barbed wire suddenly loomed up in front of us. We turned sharp to the left and into thick underbrush, then careened back onto the path on the other side of the fence.
