Nine

I tried not to think about it too much. Hayden brought it up once, a day later while we were cuddling. He said, “Finley…” then he took a moment trying to find words. I waited, tensing slightly, sensing what it was going to be. “I don’t know how to say this…”

“Don’t,” I said.

“No, I have to—”

“You don’t.”

“But I do,” he said. His fingers combing through my hair, he lifted his head forward to try to see my face. I hid it in his chest. “You might be pregnant.”

I breathed out harshly, because that was the first time it was said out loud, and it made it feel so much more real now. “Don’t jinx it,” I told him. At that point I was still hoping I’d get my period and then none of it would matter.

He wouldn’t leave it alone though. He pushed himself up on his pillow and cupped my face in his hands so that I had to look him in the eyes. “Finley,” he tried again. But I couldn’t hold myself together. I was a mess more than I’d ever been before. “Hey, baby no, don’t cry. Please don’t cry,” he hushed, using his thumbs to wipe at my cheeks. “I’m going to take care of you. Okay? Everything is going to be okay. I’m going to get better, and we’re going to have a nice quiet winter, and no one’s going to bother us. It’ll just be you and me, and everything’s going to be perfect. And soon, if we’re lucky, by the end of next summer we’ll have our own little family.” He had a smile on his face like his dreams were coming true.

I couldn’t control my breathing, my nose clogged up, and I squeezed my lips in all different ways, but nothing felt right.

“Don’t you want that?” he asked, touching his nose to mine. “Please don’t cry. Everything’s going to be okay. We’re going to figure it out, okay?”

“I’m scared,” I managed to get out.

“Don’t be. I’m here for you, okay? We’re going to do this together.” He wrapped his arms around my head, pressing my cheek into his chest, scratching against the duct tape. “You’re going to be a great mother.” His steady breathing was calming. “Finley, I love you, you know that, right? Do you know how much I love you? Because the moment I laid eyes on you… It was in that dim basement that we had practice in, Amir had been bragging about you for weeks, and he finally brought you around to meet us. You probably don’t remember. It’s okay. You didn’t look at me once. But I knew, since the very first time I saw you, that you were going to be the rest of my life.”

I sniffled, wiping my tears onto him, listening to his voice, soft and reassuring. His words were exactly what I needed to hear, and they lifted a heavy weight from my chest. We were good, and this is what I needed, and life was going to be better.
