Life Lesson: Blinders Aren’t Always Bad

Many people too often compare themselves, on a daily basis, with other people in their office or industry. Instead of focusing on becoming the best that they can be, they focus on others and their achievements and accolades. To be successful, the race of life requires that you focus on you, not on those around you. If you are in a competitive environment you must focus forward. As in a race, if you start focusing on others, you will lose your balance and begin running their race rather than your own.

Other runners may be faster than you are; some will be slower. Some will be better conditioned than you; others, not as conditioned. Many racers have run decades but you have just begun. Each person running has her or his own reason for running. Each person is running his or her own race in life and should be trying to be the best they can be, rather than trying to keep up with others.

Once you focus on your goals, rather than on the goals of others, you will feel the pure enjoyment of challenging yourself. As a self-employed person, I can tell you firsthand that I am a tough boss to myself, much more demanding than any other boss or manager would ever dare be to me. Why would I compare myself with others? I can’t afford to take my eyes off my own goal. If I concentrate on what others are doing, I’ll become unbalanced, focusing behind rather toward the direction that I am going.

Focusing on ourselves and the direction we are going is difficult because we often succumb to the constant pressure to compare ourselves with others. You will be tempted to turn around. You will be tempted to begin comparing yourself with others. But you must continue to focus on your goal. Otherwise, your pace will be disrupted. Many people are so busy comparing themselves to others that they lose sight of how great a person they truly have become.

Just as my efforts as a runner are individual, so are my professional efforts. As a self-employed person, I can tell you that there’s no one in my corporation who’s going to make me succeed other than myself. I can’t hide behind the fact that shipping or receiving or marketing didn’t do their job and that’s why something didn’t happen. In my business, I am all of those entities.

I have to put forth the effort. It’s very similar to training to run—you have to make the effort because no matter who else is out there running, they’re not going to help your efforts. There’s a great similarity between the discipline it takes to be a runner and the focus required to be a successful, self-employed entrepreneur.

Pretend your glasses have “blinders” on them, similar to what horses wear so they don’t get distracted. You are going to focus, focus, and continue to focus forward. There is no turning back. You cannot undo what happened
