Wait. What? I thought he was mad at us.

4. The Tornado

After their trial separation, Mom and Dad’s divorce became final in 1970. Any shred of hope that Mom still had of becoming famous or realizing the Hollywood dream in any form was long gone. She didn’t react well at all to her new “divorced housewife” status, and she turned to a daily cyclone of booze for comfort.

After years of concealed drinking, Mom’s habit was now fully out in the open. She didn’t drink during the day, but at exactly 5 PM on the dot each and every afternoon, Mom’s rip-roaring drama began and her personality completely flipped. During the day, she was demure, thoughtful, and gracious. But after 5:00, she affected a British accent, lamented repeatedly about everything, bragged about her glory days dancing in Hollywood musicals, quoted lines from the entertainment business, and pointed her toes everywhere she went. My life abruptly switched from the polite, stomach-churning exactitude of living under Dad’s rule, to utter chaos.
