There are several processes that go into making a quilt—design; material choices; piecing, appliqué, or surface design; layering; stitching/quilting; embellishing; finishing the edges; and making the quilt ready for hanging. All of them are important to a successful project. Fortunately, as art quilters, we hold to few rules and have multiple techniques to choose from for each process. We can emphasize our strong points and simplify the parts we don’t enjoy as much. Most of all, savor the journey. Think of these projects as starting points for your own creative ideas—after all, the term art quilt implies that the piece is one of a kind, so make it your own!
