Edward took his leave and hurried to the car. All the way home, he thought about the energy he’d served, and it had been massive enough to take his mind off his sleeping son. Now that the energy was no longer flowing freely, Edward’s mind returned to Kaleb, but he also had a few other Earned to talk to about Joey and Tray.

But first, Edward wanted to sit by Kaleb’s side and hold his hand. It was incredible what a powerful being he was becoming, yet Edward sometimes still saw the emaciated kid who had appeared when they broke the anchor.

Walking into his room and finding the young Fay sitting on his cot looking at Kaleb like he had no other reason to exist cut into Edward. He couldn’t imagine what the young man felt, but he had a pretty good idea how the father felt. Losing Kaleb to the fall had almost destroyed Edward. Losing a son to another realm because of a mistake you made had to be even worse.

“Is he... okay?” Edward asked in a whisper.

“Yes. He sounds like he sleeps peacefully.”

Edward sat on the edge of the bed, stroking Kaleb’s face. No response, but Eric was right—the light snore and relaxed expression gave Edward the feeling that Kaleb was indeed getting the much-needed timeout after all that had happened. But he was also conscious that the young Fay had needs, too.

“Have you eaten, Eric?”

“Yes, thank you.”

“Do you need anything?” Edward asked. The completely white young man was easy to see even though the shades did a pretty good job of eliminating the early evening sun.

“I... how do I learn about this realm?”

Edward smiled. “Can you read our language?”

“I don’t know.”

Edward grabbed a magazine from Kaleb’s desk, looking over what it was. College Basketball. Of course. Edward went to kneel next to Eric and turned on the little lamp on the bookcase. Eric squinted.

“Sorry.” It took a moment for Eric to get used to the light, and Edward wondered whether the young man had just sat in the dark and stared at a sleeping Kaleb. “You can come downstairs and get to know the rest of us, if you want.”

“Thank you, but I’d like to wait for Master to wake up. I want to make sure the fairy dust is gone.”

Edward looked at Kaleb. “How do you determine it?”

“I can see it. It makes him glow. He’s not glowing as much anymore.”

Edward smiled, happy to hear it, yet he found the Master comment disturbing. It was not his place to talk to Eric about it, though, and he believed his son plenty qualified. All Edward could do was make the young Fay feel welcome, so he opened the magazine and spent half an hour chatting about basketball and human letter systems.

Dad, dinner.

Edward smiled at Phil’s short message. “Would you like to come eat dinner with us?” He’d already asked, but he just wanted to make sure that the young Fay had been given the option again.

“No, thank you.
