Reflection and Application (6:17–21)

In God’s eyes, wealth is meant to create community. A recent study done at the University of British Columbia and Harvard concluded that people who give generously of what they have to others are happier than those who do not. Is this surprising? Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Anecdotal evidence confirms that those who tithe, whether to the Church or to the needy, enjoy a greater happiness in this life—and Jesus and Paul agree that it is also an investment in the happiness to come.
