CHAPTER SEVEN
WHATâS YOUR COMPANY CULTURE?
Attracting and Retaining Talent by the Culture You Cultivate
Hire great people and give them freedom to be awesome.
âANDREW MASON, FOUNDER, GROUPON
A positive corporate culture doesnât happen by accident. Thoughtful ideas and values, along with hiring practices, compensation, âperks,â atmosphere, and more come together to create an environment where people want to work (or you screw upâand they donât). Fortune conducted a Great Place to Work survey, and in 2022, the top company ranked was Cisco, an information technology corporation. According to Fortune, the results, based on approximately 870,000 employee surveys, analyze these following areas that employees say are important to them and their work culture:77
â¢High levels of trust
â¢Respect
â¢Credibility
â¢Fairness
â¢Pride
â¢Camaraderie
Some of the reasons those surveyed ranked Cisco so highly included things like fairness, the ability to take time off if needed (flexibility), and a sense of safety and acceptance, regardless of race or sexual orientation.78 Cisco credits seeking employees with a high emotional quotient or EQ who are nurturing, providing their employees with the tools necessary to succeed, giving employees time off to make a difference through volunteering, and emphasizing diversity and inclusion as some of their focuses in developing a workplace of the future.79
According to Inc., corporate culture can be defined as:
The shared values, attitudes, standards, and beliefs that characterize members of an organization and define its nature. Corporate culture is rooted in an organizationâs goals, strategies, structure, and approaches to labor, customers, investors, and the greater community. As such, it is an essential component in any businessâs ultimate success or failure.80
